20 Questions for Political Candidates
To make a wise choice on the leaders we choose, we should expect answers to questions on a variety of issues. But what is the minimum information should we as citizens expect from our candidates. If I were moderating a debate, these are the questions I would ask to find out not only candidates’ positions but also their values.
1. Should states be able to enact laws to regulate abortion?
2. Would you accept using waterboarding as a tactic in the war on terror?
3. Is income equality a valid concern and, if it is, what can be done to correct it?
4. Should insurance companies be allowed to discriminate on the basis of pre-existing conditions?
5. What is are the best ways of stopping illegal immigration into this country?
6. What are your three main source of news?
7. Should a US citizen be allowed to own an assault rifle?
8. Should we use military force to stop a country from getting a nuclear weapon?
9. How do we change the tax system to make it simpler and more fair?
10. What is the role of religion in pubic policy?
11. Are some banks too big to fail and should they be?
12. Do you believe the government has a role in trying to lift people out of poverty?
13. Should the EPA exist as a federal agency?
14. What is your plan for rebuilding our nation’s infrastructure?
15. Should we privatize Social Security and Medicare, and if not, how do we insure they are solvent in the future?
16. What should we do to reduce the effects of climate change?
17. Can tax cuts stimulate an economy without increasing the deficit?
18. Does the U.S. have a moral obligation to take in refugees from the Middle East or other places where people are at risk for political stands or ethnic identity?
19. At what point does the deficit reach a point where the debt is unsustainable?
20. Is there significant racism in law enforcement, and if there is, how do we reduce it?
